Some Really Great Kitchen Ideas From Umbra

Image
At Contemporary Heaven we stock a wide range of goods manufactured by Umbra, including the Umbra kitchen ware range and Umbra bathroom ware. They produce a number of products in their "Buddy" design – the little man with outstretched arms who is your "buddy". For instance, there is the Buddy Corkscrew. Made of a shiny silver coloured metal, the top part of the Buddy Corkscrew is the corkscrew itself which, when not in use, sits in Buddy's legs keeping it protected, and safe from somebody accidently hurting themselves on the point of the corkscrew. The outstretched arms give you a great grip when using the corkscrew for its' most important purpose – opening that bottle of Chateau Plonque 1987 for dinner. Buddy makes his appearance again, this time in black with his outstretched arms holding a bunch of napkins, keeping them tidy in the kitchen, on the bar or on the table. Always busy, Buddy arrives again at the bottom o...

Modern Furniture Uses a Lot of Acrylic

Image
Modern furniture designs today have shifted away from using traditional materials like wood, and now incorporate a lot of plastics and acrylic. There is a great tendency towards using bar stools, both for a bar and for use in the kitchen for eating from a counter. For example, the company Kartell produce a bar stool which has four legs and is of vintage design, but is made of see-through acrylic. It is moulded from a single piece of acrylic which makes it extremely strong, and shatter and chip-proof. It is also stackable, and it is weatherproof as well, so can be used on the patio. Umbra use outstanding modern furniture designs for their bar stools too. Like Kartell, they produce a bar stool in clear acrylic, again moulded in one piece, but the design is extremely minimalist. It doesn't have four legs but looks as though it has b...

Contemporary Lighting Tends Towards the Minimal

Image
In order to understand the definition of contemporary lighting we need to look back at some traditional lighting and then the difference will become more apparent. Lighting from years gone by was what one might describe as "busy": think of chandeliers. They had lots and lots of glass pieces that radiated the light from a central bulb or bulbs. Others had a series of smaller bulbs arranged in a circle towards the edge of the glasswork. Table lamps were often ornate, with flower patterns in a variety of different colours, or a combination of different coloured marble stands. Some of the shades were plain enough, but many sported fancy trims along the top and bottom edges. Standard lamps were much the same. Contemporary lighting on the other hand has a tendency towards the minimalist. Clean and smooth shapes abound, and the designs are often thought-provoking and a talking point. For example, the company Kare makes a wall light which looks like a han...
